Attachment Based Therapy is a type of therapy based on Attachment Theory developed by John Bowlby in the 1950s which focuses on the role of early interactions between a child and their parent or caregiver. His theory describes four types of attachment styles (secure, avoidant, anxious and disorganized) which influence people’s relationships later in life.

It is a treatment approach that can be used to treat mood disorders, trauma and relationship issues. This approach is often helpful for individuals who have been victims of abuse or neglect, had a parent die, have been in foster care, have been through a divorce or who have experienced strained relationships with their family of origin.
